If you’re looking for a unique experience, consider visiting the Colosseum at night. The arena takes on an entirely new quality under the stars, and the evening tours offer a more intimate and peaceful experience.

Official admission prices without additional services (no skip-the-line entry):

• Adults: €18

These tickets are available only on-site or via the official website (English, credit card or Google pay only). Purchasing Colosseum tickets online allows visitors to skip lines (at the ticket office, you still need to go trough security checks), choose specific time slots, and secure their tickets in advance amid high visitor traffic, making it a convenient option for those planning a trip to Rome.

Free tickets can be requested online but need to be picked up at the ticket office at the Colosseum.

Priority-entry Colosseum tickets allow you to skip the line at the ticket office, but you still have to go through the security check. Admission prices for adults range between €19 and €35, depending on the season and availability.

Important Note

Colosseum tours often consist of multiple parts. For example, standard tickets do not include access to the arena floor or the underground area beneath the arena.

The Roma Pass and Roma Superpass are excellent options if you plan to visit many attractions in Rome and use public transportation. Both passes include unlimited use of buses, metro, and trams.

Roma Pass

• 48-hour Pass: Includes entry to one attraction.
• 72-hour Pass: Includes entry to two attractions.

For the Colosseum, the Roma Pass grants basic entry only (no arena floor, underground, Roman Forum, or Palatine Hill access). Note that the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are considered separate attractions under the pass rules.

Roma Superpass

• Automatically includes entry to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and several other attractions. However, it does not include access to the arena floor or underground levels.

Both the Roma Pass and Roma Superpass must be collected in Rome. After online booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email, but the actual pass must be picked up at a designated tourist information center. Detailed instructions can be found on the ticket pages (see links in the table) and in the email confirmation after booking.

The Colosseum offers numerous guided tours for small and large groups. Most tours last about 3 hours. Unfortunately, availability changes almost daily.

Underground Tours

The Colosseum Underground Tour is a unique and fascinating experience that allows you to explore the hidden tunnels and passageways beneath the arena floor. This restricted area can only be visited as part of a guided tour, and it offers a glimpse into the lives of the gladiators and wild animals that once inhabited the Colosseum.

The Underground Tour takes you through the narrow corridors and chambers that once housed the gladiators, wild animals, and slaves who worked behind the scenes. You’ll see the ancient stone walls, the remnants of the arena’s complex system of pulleys and counterweights, and the tunnels that led to the arena floor. There are several parking options within a 5-10 minute walk of the Colosseum, though none are free. However, you can book a parking spot online in advance, which is highly recommended, especially during peak season if you’re driving into Rome.

Traffic-Restricted Zones in Rome (ZTL – Zona Traffico Limitato)

The historic center of Rome and surrounding districts are traffic-restricted zones. Each zone has specific rules. Some zones allow cars only during certain hours, while others restrict vehicles based on emissions levels. Exceptions are typically made for electric cars, but even those require prior registration.

The Colosseum is quite centrally located in Rome, just 2 km from the main train station (Roma Termini). On a nice day, this distance can easily be covered on foot. For those who prefer not to walk or need an alternative in bad weather, public transportation is the most affordable option:

The Colosseum has its own stops for the metro, bus, and tram. The stops, Colosseo or Piazza del Colosseo, are right at the entrance to the Colosseum.

Accessibility and Facilities

The Colosseum is committed to providing accessibility and facilities for all visitors. The main entrance is step-free, and visitors with reduced mobility can easily access the ground floor and the middle tier by taking the elevator.

The Colosseum also offers a range of facilities, including:

• Toilet facilities located near the entrance
• Changing rooms for babies and a nursing station for mothers
• A luggage storage service for visitors with large bags or luggage
• A range of restaurants and cafes nearby, offering a variety of food and drink options

Please note that food and drinks are not allowed inside the Colosseum, but you can refill plastic water bottles at the water fountains inside.

Colosseum tickets are time-specific. When booking, you must select a date and time, and the chosen time must be adhered to. Late arrivals will not be admitted. Regular tickets allow you to stay in the Colosseum for a maximum of 75 minutes. This used to be all day but has been changed recently. We don’t know yet how accurately this is monitored.

Plan for a Security Check! Even with skip-the-line tickets, this applies only to the ticket queue, not the security check. The security screening is similar to airport procedures and can take up to 30 minutes during peak times. It’s recommended to arrive well in advance.

The Colosseum, arguably the oldest stadium in the world, originally had 80 entrances to allow for quick evacuation.

For visits today, the main entrance is located on the northwest side of the Colosseum.

The route through the Colosseum is one-way for safety reasons, so take your time to see everything as you go. Turning back or retracing your steps is not advisable.

You are also not allowed to stray from the designated path or enter restricted areas, which should go without saying.

Dress Code: Appropriate clothing is required, and any form of costume is prohibited.

Children: Children must be supervised and held by the hand.
